Leisure activities at Loch Lomond

The "Loch Lomond Shores" shopping center in Alexandria, Scotland, is a renowned retail destination and one of the main attractions in the Loch Lomond region, located on the southern shore of the lake of the same name within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. It opened in 2002 and spans an area that includes over 30 shops and facilities. The center is less of a traditional enclosed shopping mall and more of an open, semi-circular shopping and leisure area set against the stunning backdrop of Loch Lomond and the surrounding hills. It attracts over a million visitors annually and combines shopping with recreational activities and nature experiences, making it a unique destination for locals and tourists alike.

The shopping options at "Loch Lomond Shores" are diverse, featuring a mix of well-known brands and smaller, often local shops. The main retailer is Frasers, a department store of the House of Fraser group, previously known as Jenners, offering a wide range of designer fashion, beauty products, accessories, and household items. It also houses the Valvona & Crolla Food Hall, which sells high-quality Scottish foods such as smoked salmon and malt whisky. Other notable shops include Sports Direct for sports and outdoor clothing, Catherine Kinloch Pavers Shoes for fashionable footwear, Loch Lomond Jewellers for jewelry, and Misty Glen for handmade gifts. There are also specialized stores like The Whisky Shop, which offers a selection of Scottish spirits, as well as boutiques featuring Harris Tweed products and outdoor clothing from brands like Hawkshead. This variety appeals to both fashion-conscious shoppers and those seeking regional products.

Restaurants overlooking Loch Lomond

In addition to shopping, "Loch Lomond Shores" is a significant leisure and dining destination. It offers a variety of restaurants and cafés, often using local and Scottish ingredients with views of the lake. Options include the Kilted Skirlie Restaurant & Cocktail Bar with upscale cuisine, Café Zest in Frasers with a relaxed atmosphere, and Caffé at the Shores for light snacks. For families, there is the Lomond Pirates Play Zone & Café, which combines dining with a play area. The center is also a starting point for numerous activities: it hosts the Loch Lomond SEA LIFE Aquarium, showcasing Scotland's largest collection of sharks, as well as the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre with falconry displays. Outdoor enthusiasts can rent bikes, canoes, or motorboats, utilize the TreeZone Aerial Adventure Course, or visit the Adventure Golf course. This combination makes the center a year-round destination for experiences.

Scottish food and specialties

The architecture of "Loch Lomond Shores" is modern and functional, focusing on integration with the natural surroundings. The main shopping building is a semi-circular structure with large glass windows that offer views of the lake, while smaller shops are arranged in an arcade style. The open design and proximity to the water create an inviting atmosphere that is enhanced by the surrounding nature trails and beach area. The center is set in a scenic location, complemented by the historic "Maid of the Loch" – a restored steamboat – and Sweeney's Cruises, which offer tours on the lake.

Family-friendly activities by the lake

Transportation access is excellent. "Loch Lomond Shores" provides ample free parking and is located directly on a main road that offers good connectivity to the A82 motorway and thus to Glasgow, approximately 25 minutes away. It is also accessible by public transport, including trains to Balloch and bus connections from the region. This accessibility attracts visitors from surrounding towns as well as day-trippers who take advantage of the proximity to attractions like Balloch Castle Country Park.

Throughout its history, "Loch Lomond Shores" has established itself as part of a larger development project intended to revitalize the area economically. It is operated by SLR Outlets and has evolved from a purely shopping center into a multifunctional destination that gains additional appeal through regular events such as Farmers’ Markets on the first and third Sunday of each month, food and drink festivals, and seasonal entertainment. However, there is some criticism: some visitors complain that the selection of shops is limited and that prices are not always competitive. The reliance on weather for outdoor activities is also occasionally cited as a drawback. Nevertheless, "Loch Lomond Shores" remains an economic and social engine for Alexandria, distinguished by its unique location and diverse offerings.

OK shopping mall in nice surroundings. Some overpriced Scottish gift shops, newsagents, healthy food shop, clothes and sports goods stores.

The smaller units are really good with friendly and helpful staff. However, it is not the place it used to be, since Jenner's closed, but the small individually owned and operated unit deserve our support.

A couple of good shops but the rest aren't great. Not what we expected but it's a beautiful location and there are other things to do. If you want a proper shopping trip this isnt the place for most people.

Shopping centre is a typical TMEP, Tourist money extraction point. Often food and craft fairs on outside at the weekend. Small but interesting engine house next to the dry-docked paddle steamer. Try the Pedalos for £25 p1/2 hour , tho' go for an hour. Great views of the paddle steamer if you get on the loch. Nice walks around too.
